What is a good internet speed?
A good connection is fast enough for every active device and stable enough for real-time traffic. Mbps matters, but ping, jitter and loss can matter more.
Quick answer
Around 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload is comfortable for many households with several simultaneous users. A single person may need much less. Competitive gaming uses little bandwidth but benefits from low ping, low jitter and no packet loss. Always size a plan for simultaneous activity, not the fastest device alone.

How to size a household connection
- Count activities likely to happen at the same time.
- Add their approximate bandwidth needs.
- Add 20–30% headroom for updates, bursts and Wi-Fi overhead.
- Check upload separately if you call, stream or back up files.
- Use ping, jitter and loss to judge responsiveness and stability.
Mbps is not MB/s
Internet plans and speed tests normally use megabits per second (Mbps). File downloads often show megabytes per second (MB/s). Eight bits equal one byte, so a 100 Mbps connection has a theoretical maximum near 12.5 MB/s before protocol and network overhead.
Test conditions matter
First test near the router, then test where you normally use the connection. A fast result beside the router and a slow result in another room usually points to Wi-Fi coverage rather than the internet plan. Ethernet is the best control test when available.
